Date Pinwheels

1 lb. chopped dates
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
Cook for 2-3 minutes.  May need to add a little more water if too thick.  Add 1 cup of chopped walnuts after it is cooked and let cook.

Cream together:
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

Sift together the dry ingredients and add:
1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp salt

Stir until smooth.  Dough may be a little sticky.  Refrigerate for several hours.  Divide the dough in half and roll out on a floured bread board until about 1/4 inch thick.  Put half of the date mixture on it and roll it up, like a jelly roll.  Slice and bake in 350* oven for 10-12 minutes.  Do not overbake.
